NOVOTEL Northbeach plans to spend about $1 million in the first stage of renovations at the 41/2 star hotel.

General manager Walter Imoos said the aim was to brighten and modernise the foyer and Windjammers restaurant.

"The restaurant will maintain its beachy theme but it will be modernised with new flooring and furniture," he said.

The second stage of the refurbishment later this year will target areas such as the public toilets and extra retail area.

The hotel was built in 1989 and has not had a major refurbishment since 2000.

Mr Imoos said Splashes nightclub, the scene of the murder of father of two Dragan Sekulicia in the early hours of September 8 last year in front of staff, would remain closed.

Mr Imoos said the hotel owner was looking for retail consistent with the resort to replace the nightclub area.
