Hotel's Fate To Be Decided

THE future of the heritage listed Great Northern Hotel could be decided as soon as tomorrow.

The building, on the corner of Scott and Watt streets, Newcastle, has fallen into disrepair in recent years.

Owner Crown Management Newcastle wants to refurbish the six-storey hotel and build an eight-storey extension on vacant land to the property's east.

The Herald reported in December 2007 on the plans for redevelopment.

Small revisions have since been made to the proposal and seven objections lodged with Newcastle City Council after a public exhibition period.

The application is set to be determined by Newcastle councillors tomorrow. Council staff recommend approval.

The building would be refurbished, with new bars and restaurants, and 92 hotel rooms.
