PLANS to renovate and extend Darby Street's Hotel Delany have been recommended for approval, despite concerns about noise and parking.
A development application, which includes a two-storey extension to the southern side of the building and a new function room, will go before Newcastle City Council tomorrow night.Council staff recommended 28 conditions be attached to the approval. Two submissions from residents said the development would exacerbate the existing parking problems and contribute to noise and anti-social behaviour. The Cooks Hill Community Group said the expansion was inconsistent with the suburb's heritage conservation area.Council staff found the development would result in a shortfall of on-site parking, but nearby public car parks would cater to the demand.Recommended conditions include that the external colour scheme be submitted for approval to the council's heritage officer and that ground floor doors be fitted with automatic closing devices to minimise noise. The extensions are planned to shift the hotel's focus to functions and dining to counter reduced income from poker machine restrictions and smoking bans.
